Gila Monster Outback...

ride with the monsters!

Highline Trail, Gila County, AZ

What's the best antidote for a blisteringly hot Phoenix summer day?

A short roadtrip up the Beeline Highway to Rim Country.  Specifically, an early morning "take-off" on the Highline Trail from the Two-Sixty trailhead.

The Highline will test your technical skills, to be sure.  Even along stretches of Highline that don't gain or lose significant elevation, there are enough outcrops of red Supai and duff-colored Coconino Sandstone babyheads and boulders to test your line-picking ability.  Your efforts will be richly rewarded with sections of flowy hardpack through the filtered sunlight and dense cool shadows that alternate along the trail.

And the air just feels good.

My favorite time of year to ride the out-&-back between the Two-Sixty Trailhead and Christopher Creek is during the monsoon season.  You can count on being caught in the belly of a boisterous summer thunderstorm right about noon.
